TNI vessel sunk in the Thousand Islands

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian military (TNI) official said the sinking speedboat of the Jakarta Military Command [Kodam Jaya] in Thousand Islands, Jakarta, was due to the pipe strainer leak.

“The water entered the engine room and damaged the pipes,” said TNI's Army Force Chief of Staff Security Assistant Maj. Gen. Muhammad Nur Rahmad in Jakarta, March 21. He added the pipe was used to suck up seawater as to cool down the main engine.

The KMC AD 1605 speedboat, running along with KMC AD 0415, was heading to Pramuka Island, Thousand Islands. The boat was carrying 65 officers who planned to hold social work purposes.

Nur claimed the high wave caused the water to enter the ship which reached up to 2-3 meter in height, as the investigation reports.

According to Nur, the ship captain turned off the engine after the vessel flooded by the seawater. The boatload then gradually heavier and slowly began to sink.

Nur explained the TNI's Kodam Jaya vessel was in a good condition and ready to sail and did not overload. He said the boat itself is 21 tons in weight and its maximum capacity at 28 ton. All the crew and passengers were safe in the incident.
