TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gelato ice cream is nowadays becoming famous in Indonesia. Two ice cream parlors that serve gelato, Tempo Gelato Yogyakarta and Gusto Gelato di Bali, are popular on social media a places where young people hang out.
Actually, this Italian-data-style ice cream had already appeared in an older version. In contrast to its present look with cones, the past version of gelato is served on an iron bowl or wrapped in food paper.
Although there have been many gelato vendors, this colonial-aged ice cream parlors still exist. Check out these three legendary ice cream restaurants located in different areas:
1. Tropik (or Tropic) Ice Cream, Jakarta
Since 1950, Tropic ice cream has become legendary. The strategic location at the main gate of Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, make the stall owned by a Chinese descendant family Mayti always become a place to stop for the visitors.
At this stall, the main ice cream menu is the homemade tutti-frutti; it is rectangular ice cream made of chocolate, mocha, and vanilla. The ingredients are made from pure milk.
The price ranges from Rp38,000. There are also other ice cream options, such as single ice cream with a canned fruit-topping for Rp28,000.
2. Zangrandi Ice Cream, Surabaya
An ancient building, that looks like a joglo (Javanese house), stands in the middle of the city of heroes which is full of historical value. Rattan chairs circling around the table can be seen at the wide front porch of the shop. Vintage decorations, which are the heritages from Dutch colonial era, can also be seen on its floor tiles and windows.
At this ice cream restaurant, people order the homemade ice cream made from pure milk. Just like in the Tropic ice cream, the main menu in here is also tutti-frutti. The rectangular ice cream wrapped with food-grade paper. The price ranges from Rp22,000.
Zangrandi ice cream in Surabaya is located right in the downtown, which is on Jalan Yos Sudarso No. 15, Genteng.
