TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Debasish Bandyopadhyay, research head, revealed a number of benefits of avocado seed for our health. First it contains docosanol, a substance responsible for nutrition supplement. It also contains antivirus and heptacosane—to suppress tumor.
Not only that, avocado seed has dodecanois that can protect you from areosklerosis, a disease causing narrowing of the arteries. It also contains benzyl butyl phthlate.
"GlaxoSmitKline, a pharmaceutical company from the U.K, is currently developing Abreva, a fever medicine containing docosanol," University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Biochemist Bandyopadhyay said on Wednesday (14/2).
So, he went on, do not throw it away. It can be processed to develop new medicine. "It is safer than synthetic substances," he said.
Bandyopadhyay and his team collected 300 avocado, dried and finely mashed. The team used gas chromatography mass spectrometri. This process changes substances into steam and the extract will be retrieved.
