TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Ade Supandi openly supported the policy introduced by the Maritime Affairs and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti about cantrang (fish trawl). He said that the problem regarding cantrang is nothing new.

“We must maintain the sustainability, don’t take them all at once today. [Take a look at] what are we going to leave behind for our children and grandchildren,” said the admiral on Thursday, January 18.

Ade explained that the Navy is authorized to uphold the Fishery law, “The Indonesian Navy is related to the security of Indonesian waters. We must, therefore, support any policies produced by the Maritime Affairs and Fishery Ministry,” he said.

Yesterday, Minister Susi met with several cantrang fishermen in front of the presidential palace. She announced that President Joko Widodo had revoked the cantrang ban.

Susi Pudjiastuti also urged the fishermen to shift their fishing equipment to other alternative ones. She promised to provide the fishermen with a bank loan who are seriously considering to stop using the cantrang.
