TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said that Indonesian fishermen must place their utmost respect for President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) decision to revoke the ban on cantrang.
“The decision must be respected. I don’t want to hear things about illegal cantrang fishing boats, unregistered dimensions, and no more additional boats equipped with cantrang,” said Susi while on top of a police car in front of hundreds of protesting fishermen on Wednesday, January 17.

Not only did Minister Susi announce the decision that was discussed in the Presidential Palace, but she also urged the fishermen there to switch to other types of fishing equipment that are more eco-friendly. She also promised to provide bank loans for those who are interested in switching gears.
“Everyone must be willing to switch fishing equipment. Do you agree? If not, then the ban would be reintroduced again. Didn’t you say that you wanted to take care of Pak Jokowi? He would have a hard time if keep on being stubborn,” she said.

Furthermore, Susi Pudjiastuti continued her speech by ending it on a high note. “If liars (about a boat’s dimension) still exist, I will sink their ships next year. I want you all to dominate Indonesian seas instead of foreign ships. And what will I do if foreign ships violate (the border)? I`ll Sink them,” she said.
