TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Thursday, December 21, made an announcement at the City Hall regarding the first phase of Tanah Abang reorganization.

“Hopefully, this could be a solution that can be felt by members of the public who routinely visits Tanah Abang,” said Anies Baswedan.

Anies Baswedan explained that Jalan Jatibaru Raya which directly faces the Tanah Abang Station will be temporarily closed from 08:00-18:00 West Indonesia Time for private vehicles and public transports. The street closure applies to both lanes, either the one from Jatibaru or that from Kebon Jati.

Parts of the public road that heads to Kebon Jati will be filled by 400 street vendors that are accommodated by Jakarta’s Department of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade. The vendors will be given vendor tents that are free of charge.

Meanwhile, Anies Baswedan only left one lane of the street for Transjakarta buses to travel non-stop from Jatibaru to Kebon Jati. The bus will transport passengers from the Tanah Abang Station to the Tanah Abang Market area.

“The bus ride will be free of charge. Commuter train passengers can transfer to a Transjakarta,” he said.

Governor Anies Baswedan ensured that the sidewalks will be used exclusively for pedestrians and not for street vendors, which is what happened once he took office as governor.
