TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Oxytocin is a hormone and a neurotransmitter involved in childbirth and breastfeeding. It also relates to empathy, thrust, sexual activities and relationship-building. The hormone is produced in the hypothalamus. Women typically have a higher level of oxytocin than men.

Oxytocin is often called the “love hormone” as oxytocin level increases when we hug our partner. The hormone is also has a beneficial effect during the treatment for several conditions, including depression, anxiety and colon problems.

Listed below are five ways to release oxytocin in your body and make your partner happier.

1. Making eye contact

When you smile warmly and stare into each other’s eyes, oxytocin can boost your confidence.

2. Hugging

Hold each other, share a hug. Oxytocin can make you want to keep close with your partner.

3. Holding hands

The touch of a partner’s hand reduces stress hormone, cortisol, lowers your blood pressure and releases oxytocin.

Kissing sparks release of not only dopamine but also oxytocin.
