TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s retail industry continues to show a negative trend after the well-known American clothing and accessories retailer GAP decided to close its three Indonesian outlets.
GAP has decided to close its stores that spread across three shopping centers in Jakarta. Its store Pondok Indah Mall will be the first to be closed in November,
meanwhile, the rest that is located in Grand Indonesia Mall and Lippo Mall Puri will follow suit in February of 2018.
JM, an employee of GAP who we met at one of the stores confirmed the news of the closure. “It will be closed entirely by February 2018,” said JM on Monday, November 27.
JM also explained that the store in Grand Indonesia Mall is currently offering large discounts for all of its products up to 70 percent off. “Spring products are discounted over 50 percent, other seasonal products will have discounts under 50 percent,” said JM.
GAP’s discounts, according to JM, have been available for the past three to four months. The employee also revealed that GAP’s US management decided not to extend their contract with GAP in the Asian region.
Despite its closure, JM said that the company that employed them, PT Kharisma Sentrabuana Asri, decided not to layoff it employees from GAP retail outlets and will be transferred to other branches.
