TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) Senior Researcher Syamsuddin Haris said that a large number of first-time voters among the growing millennials will significantly affect the 2018 Simultaneous Regional Election and the 2019 Presidential Election.
However, Syamsuddin warned that the characteristics of these beginner voters are unpredictable. “They can’t be predicted. But what is clear is that political parties must approach this generation with a millennial approach,” he said on Tuesday, November 21.
The key to bump-up someone’s electability is to successfully attract the millennial generation, thus making the upcoming general election more competitive.
“The emergence of new political parties will create an election atmosphere much more competitive,” he said.
He further explained that new political parties will not certainly be a threat to the long-existing political parties. “Every political party will still be tested by the public during the upcoming election.”
