TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta-based SETARA Institute chairman Hendardi has called on President Joko Widodo to find a replacement for the National Armed Forces (TNI) chief General Gatot Nurmantyo, who will retire in March 2018.

“A quick replacement of General Gatot will discipline the TNI in view of political dynamics in 2018 and 2019,” Hendardi said in a press release on Monday, November 13.

Hendardi said that the move may help complete the TNI reform that is stagnating during Gatot's leadership.

“[The move] will end the TNI’s setback as the commander’s political ambition surfaced in a bad timing,” he said.

Hendardi views that Gatot’s leadership is rather political and often carried out outside the President’s will.

He said that the problems caused by Gatot will harm the TNI and disrupt the national development and Jokowi’s leadership.

Hendardi also noted that the TNI is facing the challenges to improve its solidity, professionalism, welfare, military tribunal reform, military member business, budget accountability and compliance to civil supremacy.
