TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communications and Informatics Ministry (Kemkominfo) stated that it has communicated with WhatsApp in handling pornographic GIF contents in the communication service app.
“We've done intense communication in the last two days. The response from Tenor and Giphy were also helpful, we were banded together by WhatsApp. We have unblocked it,” said the Ministry’s Director General of Application and Information Semuel Abrijani Pangarepan on Wednesday, November 8.
Kemkominfo said that WhatsApp had met the government’s two-day deadline in fixing the pornographic GIF controversy.
Currently, pornographic contents from the website Tenor could no longer be accessed through WhatsApp. Meanwhile, the website itself could not be accessed yet since it is still being monitored by the Ministry regarding the site's stability.
WhatsApp works in conjunction with Tenor and Giphy as GIF providers for the app. Giphy has already cleaned-up its contents that are against Indonesian regulation back in August following the government’s finding of a gambling advertisement within its system.
