TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Latest research suggests that women who began life as men, known as transgender women, will be able to receive donated wombs and attempt to begin pregnancy in the near future.

The suggestion was revealed by Dr. Richard Paulson, President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Speaking at the group’s annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Paulson explained that there was no anatomical reason why a womb could not be successfully implanted into a transgender woman.

“You could do it tomorrow. There would be additional challenges, but I don’t see any obvious problem that would preclude it. I personally suspect there are going to be trans-women who are going to want to have a uterus and will likely get the transplant.” said the Doctor.

Paulson added that even though men and woman have a different shaped pelvis, there would nevertheless be room for an implanted womb.

However, as reported by Independent.co.uk, the procedure would be extremely complicated and transgender women are likely to give birth by cesarean section. Womb transplant is still considered as an experimental procedure despite the recent medical advancements.

At least five babies have been born to women who had received wombs in Sweden since 2014, while UK’s initial attempts are set to be carried out next year by Dr. Richard Smith of Imperial College London.
