Setya Novanto Meme; Politicians Must be Ready to be Criticisized

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive director of Legal Aid Institute (LBH) for Press Nawawi Bahrudin stated that House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Setya Novanto is supposed to be ready to take in criticism.


"A public official has to be ready to accept all kinds of criticism," Nawawi said on Friday, Nov. 3.


Setya Novanto reported dozens of social media accounts of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to the police for defamation. Setya is objected of the publication on meme tagging him with the hashtag 'The Power of Setnov' went viral on social media.


Nawawi explained that Setya should have considered the criticism as a corrective feedback to his performance as a public official. The meme is a form of responses from the people and netizens to the poor legal system that lays powerless before corruption, he continued.


Nevertheless, the police processed the report and arrested and named Dyann Kemala Arrizqi a suspect. Nawawi explained that the arrest triggers suspicion among the people.
