TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has told construction workers to get certification. Most of the infrastructure project workers are currently uncertified. The president earlier had a discussion with the Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono on 7 million Indonesian construction workers.
“Out of 7 million, only 9 percent are certified, around 600,000. The number is too small,” Jokowi said at the Gelora Bung Karno during the handing out of certificates and inspection of Asian Games preparations today, Oct. 18.

There were 9,700 construction workers who got certified today. They came from various backgrounds, from the toll road to water management workers.
Jokowi said that the number of certified construction workers is way below the number of infrastructure projects in Indonesia. He said that the country is currently stepping up infrastructure development to boost economic growth.
The President elaborated that there are 24 projects in Kalimantan, 27 in Sulawesi, 13 in Papua and 61 in Sumatra. Therefore, more qualified construction workers are needed.
“With trained and certified construction workers, I believe that we can catch up on the infrastructure deficit, particularly in terms of quality. If Japanese can build high quality [infrastructure], Germans can build high quality [infrastructure], why can’t Indonesians?” Jokowi said.
