TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto said that he will inaugurate the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) this month.

The government formed BSSN on May 19 under a presidential regulation No. 53/2017. BSSN is a non-ministry government agency under the auspices of and responsible to the president.

The BSSN is the sole implementer and adviser in state cryptography to ensure the security of classified state information. The agency is also tasked with presenting encrypted information review to preserve the national security. The BSSN is not a new agency but an enhancement to the National Encryption Agency that is now supported by the Directorate of Informatics Security.

President Joko Widodo agreed with the formation of the BSSN in a limited meeting, Wiranto said. He added that the BSSN will be responsible for all cyber activities.

“Be it the Defense Ministry’s cyber defense, BIN’s [National Intelligence Agency] cyber intelligence, the TNI’s [National Armed Forces] cyberwar. Or commercial cyber of the banking industry,” the Minister said.
