TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan expects that the newly elected Jakarta Governor and Deputy Governor Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno will become the leader of all people regardless of backgrounds.
Earlier in his inaugural speech at the City Hall on October 16, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that it was high time for ‘native Indonesians’ (pribumi) to take back control from foreigners.
“We, the natives, used to be oppressed and defeated [by imperialists]; now that we have our independence, it is time to take back control,” he said.

Anies said that Jakarta residents should enjoy the fruit of independence. Jakarta should see the implementation of the national ideology: Pancasila (five pillars).
“Pancasila should become a reality in the capital city. The pillars should be adopted in our daily lives. Indonesia is not a country based on a single religion only; however, Indonesia is not anti-religion. The belief in God should be the foundation as said in the first pillar of Pancasila,” the governor said.
Anies Baswedan's reference to the term ‘pribumi’ in his speech has been a talking point since the Presidential Instruction No. 26/1998 bans the use of the terms ‘pribumi and non-pribumi’ (natives and non-natives) in state governance.
