TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) announced that it would distribute electronic money (e-money) cards for free on October 16-31.

Pungky Wibowo, director of electronic money at the BI’s payment system policies and supervisory department, said in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, that the toll road users who have not acquired e-money cards yet would be given a card at toll gates.

“These [cards] are for those who have not had [e-money cards]. They are expected to be honest,” he said.

However, Pungky clarified that toll road users still must purchase the balance.

“It’s a program initiated by the Toll Road Agency under the supervision of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT), in collaboration with banks,” Pungky added.

The free e-money cards are issued by five banks, namely Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Mandiri, Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), and Bank Central Asia (BCA).

Pungky hopes that the program will encourage toll road users to utilize e-money as a payment means before it becomes mandatory on October 31.
