TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Through a program established by Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (HESA) and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), seven Indonesian teachers were granted the opportunity to study at the USSRC in Huntsville, Alabama.

Accompanied by Alex J Pollack, President Director of Honeywell International Inc, six out of the seven teachers paid visit to Tempo headquarters today, October 4, to share their experiences during the five-day science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) training session in June this year.

The Junior High teachers at the field of science and mathematics participated in the 45 hours of intensive class regarding science and space exploration.

Shiva Karve, a teacher from Bunda Mulia school in Jakarta, said that she gained a vast amount of knowledge from the program, which she considers priceless. “Children nowadays are always intimidated by mathematics, this training session enables us to change the mindset of students regarding mathematics while at the same time creating a fun learning process for our students,” she said.

Other participants include Andri Permana from Cita Hati school in West Surabaya, Grice Purba from Taruna Bangsa Junior High School in Bogor, Slamet Riyadi from the State Junior High School Tengaran Satu Atap in Salatiga, Andriana Susmayanti from Pelita Bangsa school in Bandar Lampung, Ahmad Zimamul Umam from High Scope School Jakarta, and Marjon Roche from Xin Zhong School in Surabaya.

HESA is a program introduced by Honeywell – a US company that works in the field of aerospace products and advanced technologies – that opens the opportunity for math and science teachers to study about space and science which will assist them in becoming a much more effective educator in the field of science, technology, and math.

Since 2004, more than 2,776 educators from 62 countries globally and 52 states in the U.S. graduated the program. Indonesia has sent 30 people to the program since 2014. An online registration is available for next year’s batch that can be accessed through https://hesa.fluidreview.com/.
