TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives' (DPR) Ethics Council member said that the letter signed by DPR Deputy Speaker Fadli Zon regarding the investigation on Setya Novanto could potentially be an abuse of authority.

The DPR's ethics council member Sarifuddin Sudding reasoned that the issuance of a letter representing an institution must be decided by the institution as a whole. "It should have been determined through a plenary meeting or an internal deliberation process (Bamus),” he said Thursday, September 14.

Sarifuddin added that if it was just an aspiration letter, it should have been communicated directly to the person involved with the KPK investigation, and not signed by the DPR speakers.

Previously, Fadli Zon was reported by the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society to the DPR’s Ethics Council. Fadli defended his actions by stating that the letter he sent to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was an aspiration letter from Setya Novanto as a member of society.

The DPR Deputy Speaker Fahri Hamzah echoed Fadli Zon's comment saying that his institution's letter sent to KPK did not violate any ethical code and they only forwarded the letter.
