TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has called on the Supreme Court (MA) and the Judicial Commission (KY) to watch the pretrial hearing session petitioned by electronic ID card (e-KTP) graft suspect Setya Novanto.

Earlier, Setya Novanto, who currently serves as the House of Representatives Speaker, filed a pretrial motion lawsuit against the Corruption Eradication Commissioned (KPK) with the South Jakarta District Court.

“We expect the Judicial Commission to serve its supervisory function since the [pretrial] process. The Supreme Court must also form a team dedicated to watching the hearing session,” ICW coordinator Adnan Topan told Tempo today, September 6.

According to Adnan, it is important to intensively supervise Setya Novanto’s pretrial lawsuit since the e-KTP graft case allegedly involved powerful people. Adnan also suggested KY and MA to look at the judge’s ruling whether it is in favor of or against Setya Novanto.

The anti-corruption activist group also called on the public to watch Setya Novanto’s pretrial hearing sessions.

“We must ensure that the panel of judges handling the pretrial lawsuit is free from intervention or intimidation,” Adnan said. He added that any law enforcement institutions handling the e-KTP graft case must take public interest into account.
