TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla announced that he will express stance of Indonesia on the Rohingya crisis at the upcoming OIC and UN Summits. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit will be held in Kazakhstan on September 10-11.

Even though the summit will focus on science and technology discussion and not global politics, Jusuf Kalla said that he will continue to use the venue to bring more awareness on the solving of Rohingya crisis.

“I will be meeting with many world leaders, we will discuss the Rohingya crisis,” said Jusuf Kalla today. Kalla said that he will also express Indonesia’s views at the General Assembly of the United Nations that will be held on September 19.

Jusuf Kalla argued that the Rohingya crisis that is currently happening in Rakhine State, Myanmar, involved many factors. There are at least four elements that have erupted the ethnic crisis there, namely the history, economy, politic, and religion.

From its historical perspective, the problem has risen since England invaded Myanmar and regions in its vicinity. At the time, Rakhine was considered to have lack of human resources, which led the colonial government to bring in Rohingya citizens from Bangladesh which has made them into a minority group in the Rakhine State.

The crisis is not too far from political disputes where leaders focus on obtaining the Buddhist community which has the largest constituent votes. Economic and religious problems have all melted into one single pot which sparked the Rohingya crisis.
