Indonesia to Hold Gamelan Festival in London and Glasgow

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will hold the International Gamelan Festival (IGF) in London, England, and Glasgow, Scotland, on September 5-15. The event will feature the screening of a silent film ‘Setan Jawa’ directed by Garin Nugroho and the performance of a gamelan orchestra led by composer Prof. Rahayu Supanggah.
The International Gamelan Festival 2017 will also feature seminars, workshops, collaborations and awards ceremony. The Education and Culture Ministry will give special awards to three gamelan pioneers in England, namely Alec Roth, Neill Sorrell and Anne Hunt.
Education Ministry official Ahmad Mahendra told Antara news agency yesterday that the IGF is aimed at showcasing gamelan global existence as part of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy and the mapping of gamelan homecoming to Indonesia.
He said that the IGF 2017 will include workshops on traditional music instruments, such as bonang, rebab, gender, suling, etc., featuring gamelan experts Prof Rahayu Supanggah and Prof Sumarsam at SOAS University of London. Coaching clinics on traditional music Klenengan of Central Java, Banyuwangi Regency and East Java Province will also enliven the event.
Impromptu performances will be made by UK gamelan group Siswa Sukra led by Peter Smith and Gamelan South Bank led by John Pawson.
The IGF 2017 will launch on Sunday, September 10, at Cadogan Hall London.
On the same occasion, the pre-launch of Indonesia Gamelan Festival 2018 will be declared as part of the gamelan homecoming to Indonesia.
