30,000 Schools Located in Disaster Areas, Minister Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy said that about 30,000 schools are in located in disaster areas.
"We will prioritize these schools to get disaster education," he said during a National Conference on Disaster Education at the Muhammadiyah University, Magelang, Thursday, August 24.
He said that schools located in disaster areas will be given treatments depending on the type of disaster in respective areas.

"Now we are building new schools with a new standard, especially in areas prone to earthquakes," he said.
When asked about whether disaster education will be made into a school subject, he said no—it doesn’t have to be in the curriculum but should be a theme in extra-curricular programs.
In addition to mapping schools in the disaster zone, he said the ministry will also pay attentions to schools with poor buildings and conditions.
"Schools that are in poor conditions will be repaired. The budget to repair schools this year is around Rp3 billion," he said.
