TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Trashbag Community is organizing a mountain trash recovery operation dubbed Sapu Jagad 2017 on August 15-24. This event is supported by the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

The two-yearly event is done in 17 mountains across Indonesia to reduce the increasing amount of trash on the mountains. Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya said the trash on the mountain will keep on increasing if the hikers cannot take care of the environment.

“It must be understood that fixing the problem of mountain trash isn’t only the responsibility of the government or the Trashbag Community, but the society as a whole,” said Siti Nurbaya.

The Sapu Jagad 2017 operation will involve at least 1,346 people that will be led by members of outdoor based communities such as Sispala, Mapala, and KPA, and joined by the general public. Head of the operation Gerry Patra Prawira predicts that there will be 5 tons of trash collected this year.

The Trashbag Community recorded that there were 2.4 tons of trash that were collected from 15 mountains across Indonesia during the similar operation in 2015. The trash that was collected is dominated by plastics, plastic bottles, and cigarette butts.
