TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany. In the G20 Leader’s Retreat, Jokowi spoke on how to fight against terrorism.

Jokowi said that members of G20 cannot stay still in the midst of terrors around the globe.

"We have to unite to fight against terrorism," he said on Friday, July 7. He expressed that soft and hard power approaches are effective to counter terrorism.

In his speech, Jokowi brought up de-radicalization programs applied in Indonesia and they are claimed to succeed in making former terrorists repent and abandon the idea of committing acts of terror. "Weapons and military force cannot defeat terrorism," he said.

Prevention measures are of high importance. Jokowi added that it is necessary to monitor the flow of fund that supports radical groups. That is why Indonesia appreciates the support of G20 countries to process Indonesia’s membership in The Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Other counterterrorism measures include advancing information technology, spreading counter-narratives containing values of peace and tolerance and finding solutions to inequality and injustice that can trigger acts of terror.

The G20 Summit will be held in two days. Jokowi will hold bilateral meetings on the sideline of the conference.
