TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X called on the people of Yogyakarta to take preventive measures against radicalism among students and academicians.

“Stakeholders of the education sector must have an early warning system to defend against silent infiltrations of fundamentalism and radicalism,” Sultan said yesterday.

Sultan expressed his concerned over the spread of religious fundamentalism that slowly leads to radicalism and eventually terrorism.

“Every university in Yogyakarta must realize and be aware of the danger of fundamentalism and radicalism if they eventually spread,” Sultan added.

The Home Affairs Ministry earlier revealed that a group was preparing a plan for realizing a caliphate government in Indonesia.

Sultan appreciates the steps taken by Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta that has committed itself to upholding Pancasila (Five National Principles).

In the attempt to eradicate fundamentalism and radicalism, Sultan said that Indonesia must learn from other countries such as Syria and Iraq that are currently fighting ISIS.

“Now is the era of proxy wars, where radicals use a third party to spread misleading stories,” Sultan said.
