TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - While the House of Representatives is seeking an effort to exercise its inquiry right against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Indonesian Government is drafting a regulation to support corruption eradication efforts.
Teten Masduki, head of the Presidential chief of staff, said that it will be in the form of a Presidential Regulation, which will be ratified by President Jokowi soon. According to Teten, the draft is still being finalized by the National Development Planning Agency.
Teten added that the Presidential Regulation on the anti-corruption national strategy is aimed at synergizing corruption eradication agendas prepared by institutions and the KPK. In addition, the Presidential Regulation will also strengthen KPK.
“The President is not planning on weakening the KPK,” Teten Masduki claimed.
The former Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) activist explained that KPK’s role is essential in the current situation where there are a large number of infrastructure developments.
In response to attempts to weaken KPK by the House of Representatives, Teten views that it could be dangerous if KPK’s authorities, such as phone tapping and prosecution, are restricted.
