TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has joined hands with civil society coalition to form a fact-finding team of an acid attack against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) senior investigator Novel Baswedan. Komnas HAM commissioner Maneger Nasution said that the team will serve to push the police to crack down on the case.
Komnas HAM will ask prominent figures to join the team, such as former lecturer of Police Study at the University of Indonesia, Bambang Widodo Umar, former KPK deputy chief Bambang Widjojanto, former KPK chief M. Busyro Muqoddas. Maneger said that they understand the problems faced by the KPK and the National Police.

Earlier, the Civil Society Coalition for KPK found irregularities in the investigation into the case. Two major issues being the police’s inability to identify the fingerprints on a cup used to throw hydrochloric acid and the lack up publication of CCTV footage showing the situation near the scene.
In a recent interview with Time.com last week, Novel Baswedan revealed that he was told about the involvement of a general—top police officer—in this case. “I thought the info was wrong. But after two months and the case has not been resolved already, I said [to the informer] that maybe it’s true,” Novel said.
Maneger regrets that the police have yet to find the perpetrators. Over the next three months, the fact-finding team will collect facts and info to uncover the case. “The facts being found will be delivered to the President as a recommendation,” maneger said. He said that the team will start working after Eid al-Fitr.
Jakarta Metro Police spokesman said that he appreciates Komnas HAM’s decision to form the fact-finding team for Novel Baswedan. However, he expects that the Komnas HAM would submit the info and facts to the police instead. “Give us a chance to resolve the case,” Setyo said.
