TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State power company PLN plans to build a floating photovoltaic solar power plant in Cirata Reservoir, West Java. The company is now conducting a feasibility study together with a renewable energy developer from the United Arab Emirates, Masdar.

PLN Planning Director Nicke Widyawati said a floating unit is the solution to land acquisition constraints that often stall construction. Additionally, investment cost is smaller as there is no need to purchase land.

PLN subsidiary, Pembangkitan Jawa Bali, is in talks with Masdar to determine the project's technical elements. PJB is the operator of Cirata solar plant, which has 8x126-MW capacity. The partnership between the two companies will use an independent power producer (IPP) scheme. They are now discussing the plant's capacity and operating targets.

PLN is also eyeing the technology used by Masdar to develop solar plants in their home country, with power-generating capacities amounting to 150 MW and 200 MW.

This is related to the low price of electricity produced. UAE sells solar power for just US$0.0242 per kWh, far cheaper than Indonesia's photovoltaic power plants' US$0.22 per kWh.
