TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The Indonesian Humanity Action Community (KAKI) of Depok chapter has found 222 new patients suffering from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the city for the period of January-March this year.
Depok KAKI Coordinator Hardika said HIV transmission in the city is ‘very high’.
“Even in April dozens of Depot residents were identified to be infected by the virus,” he said on Friday.
According to him, the big numbers of HIV/AIDS patients in the city is pretty high because Depot is a transit city and is strategically situated. He added that there are many apartments and boarding houses in the city and the integration with Jakarta residents is quite high.
“Depok has also become a place for sexual businesses,” he added.
Hardika added that out of 222 HIV/AIDS patients reported in the first three months this year, 140 of them are gay men who do sexual intercourse without protection.
