Police to Question Rizieq after Returning from Mecca

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Police is still waiting for Islamic Defender Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab`s return from Mecca, Saudi Arabia to hold a questioning related to smartphone chats containing pornographic material allegedly took place between Rizieq and Firza Husein.
To this date, the Jakarta Police has no plan to detain Rizieq.
“[We can’t] detain [Rizieq] in a middle of his religious affair,” Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said today, May 11.
According to Argo, the Jakarta Police has not yet named a suspect in the case. He added that Rizieq will be summoned as a witness.
Rizieq and his family are currently conducting umrah or minor hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Jakarta Police needs him to provide statements related to the steamy chats.
Firza Husein was named as a suspect in an alleged treason case that took place on December 2, last year.
“We will summon the concerned person [Rizieq] and his wife to be confronted with Friza,” Argo explained.
Earlier, police have escalated the status of the case from initial investigation to investigation. Police have questioned Firza, who denied that the steamy chats between her and Rizieq had taken place. Meanwhile, Rizieq to this date has not answered police summonses.
