TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is estimated to see 366,875 new cases of cancer in 2020, with 239,030 deaths. The figure is based on the Globocan study submitted by Professor Arry Harryanto Reksodiputro, chairman of the Indonesian Internal Diseases Medical Oncology Hematology Association (Perhompedin).

Speaking at the 5th Role Internist Role in Cancer Management (Roicam) in Jakarta, Arry said new cancer cases continue to rise. In 2030, the number is predicted to increase to 489,802 with 334,749 deaths.

A research by the Health Ministry in 2013 suggested there were 347,792 cases of cancer in Indonesia, showing that 1.4 per 1,000 people had cancer.

The high mortality due to cancer, according to Arry, is partly because patients are generally treated after they reach an advanced stage.

"If the cancer is treated during the first stage, the life expectancy can be 100 percent," said Arry.

This year's Roicam theme is "Giving Hope Through Togetherness". The event is held in Jakarta from April 6 to 9.
