TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Amnesty International secretary-general Salil Shetty met the Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin on Wednesday to discuss inter-religious harmony in Indonesia and a little bit about Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok.

Lukman said that in general, the Amnesty International paid a visit to discuss the latest situations in Indonesia, particularly the government’s stance on freedom of religion and current social-political scene.

According to him, inter-religious relations amid current political scene are rather heading toward animosity. Therefore, Lukman said that the Amnesty International and Indonesia agree that as global citizens they will jointly address serious issues in relation to potential religious and political conflict.

Salil Shetty said that Indonesia is a country that has an ethnically diverse population with distinct backgrounds. He said that Indonesian must be grateful for it by respecting each other and upholding freedom of religion.

He said that the Amnesty International has noted some cases of human rights violations in Indonesia as seen in cases of violence against minority groups Ahmadiya, Gafatar, etc. He said that the Religious Affairs Minister is very committed to solving and finding the solutions to it.
