TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British Ambassador Moazzam Malik met with Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan this morning. They discussed the development of the incident involving MS Caledonian Sky that crashed into invaluable coral reefs in Raja Ampat at low tides.

Pak Luhut and I discussed and shared opinions positively about what happened in Papua,” said Ambassador Moazzam Malik on Friday, March 17, 2017.

Moazzam Malik explained that the Caledonian Sky cruise ship is, in fact, owned by a Swedish company, whereas the captain of the ship is also a U.S. citizen that does not live in the U.K.

According to the British Ambassador, if the Indonesian Government demands some clarification from the captain of the ship regarding the incident, they must contact the company that employs the captain. “As I understand, the ship’s operator has settled the matter with the Indonesian Government.”

Moazzam Malik revealed that the British government supports the steps taken by Indonesia regarding the investigation of this case. He also hopes that both parties can reach an agreement soon. “I told Pak Luhut that I would be glad if I could assist the process of the investigation.”

Moreover, the British Ambassador stated that he regrets over the incident in Raja Ampat. “As I’m upset with other environmental damages across the globe,” he said.
