TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Semarang Great Sale 2017 shopping event will be held from April 9 to May 7, 2017. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya and Semarang Mayor Handrar Prihadi launched the annual event in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 14, 2017.

The Semarang Great Sale event, initiated by the Semarang Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in collaboration with the Semarang administration, will offer discounts to commemorate the city’s anniversary.

“This has become an attraction for Semarang as a shopping and culinary destination. In the tourism business portfolio, it has a huge portion to attract tourists,” Arief said.

According to Arief, Semarang is a gateway to the tourist destinations in Yogyakarta, Solo and Semarang (Joglosemar). Borobudur has been set as one of the ten priority destinations for the Joglosemar tourism development.

Semarang Mayor Handrar Prihadi revealed that among associations participating in the event are the Central Java branch of the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo), the Semarang Pandanaran Entrepreneurs Association (APPS), the Airline Operating Committee (AOC), the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) and shopping malls.

Merchants of traditional markets and street vendors will also participate in the event.

The Semarang Great Sale this year will feature the Run Colour Party targeting young people and students as the participants.

Semarang Great Sale organizing committee chief Mei Kristanti said that event is expected to generate transactions worth at least Rp 200 billion (US$15 million) and attract 1,250 participants.
