TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Scorpion Foundation data shows that more than 90 percent of Indonesian wildlife conservations could not provide sufficient welfare standards for their animals. The foundation also recorded evidence of animal street attractions that are actually torturing the animals.
“Wildlife that is placed in conservation need more than just food. They must also be given the chance to behave naturally; free from stress and pressure; free from pain, wounds, and illness; free from distressing feelings, and must be free of hunger,” said Marison Guciano from Indonesia’s Scorpion Foundation on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
Last year, the foundation uploaded a video of a malnutrition honey bear at a zoo in Bandung that was pleading for food from visitors passing by.
The video, which finally went viral, is the tip of the iceberg of the low welfare state of wildlife animals that are currently living in Indonesia’s wildlife conservation.
In the last decade, according to Guciano, the threat against wildlife has increased. Considering that animal habitats such as forests have reduced considerably and wildlife conservation such as zoos and safari parks show appalling conditions.
Guciano stated that hope lies on the revision of Law No. 5/1990 on Conservation of Biological Resources and the Ecosystem, in order to fulfill animal’s rights.
The young generation, Guciano said, is hoped to be the front line in preserving Indonesia’s future as the center of the world’s biodiversity and a nation with the highest level of endemism in the world.
Considering that the theme of 2017 Wildlife Day is Listen to the Young Voices. Young conservationists will always be the vanguard for Indonesia’s biodiversity protection.
