TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterpries (SMEs) Ministry is set continue the program to revitalize traditional markets this year.

Despite the budget cut, the Ministry is aiming to revitalize at least 51 traditional markets all over Indonesia in 2017.

“Just because we have a low budget it does not mean we cannot do anything. We have to be creative,” said Secretary of the Minister Agus Muharram in a press conference in Jakarta on Friday (6/1).

In the meantime, I Wayan Dipta, Deputy for Production and Marketing Affairs of the Minister, specified that traditional markets to be revitalized in 2017 are 11 in undeveloped and border areas and 40 markets in other regions.

The revitalization program for each traditional market is earmarked at Rp950 million, according to Wayan.

"Border areas include those in East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, and Kalimantan,” Wayan said.

Wayan added that traditional market revitalization program is part of President Jokowi’ nawa cita (nine goals) program.

For the period of 2015–2019, the government aims to revitalize 5,000 traditional markets in Indonesia.
