TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said that illegal fishing is related to other crimes, such as human trafficking, smuggling, drugs dealing, money laundering, and even endangered animals smuggling.
"They definitely damage Indonesian youth's mentality," Susi said at the 2nd International Symposium on Fisheries Crime in Yogyakarta on Monday, October 10, 2016.
Susi explained that illegal fishing is an organized international crime. Based on investigations conducted by the Ministry, many foreign fishing boats employed crews from various countries.
Susi revealed that the government is setting up cooperation with other countries to eradicate illegal fishing. Susi hopes that the symposium would result in agreements to address crimes at sea and other relevant crimes.
Indonesia has expressed its commitment to participating in the endeavor to eradicate crimes at sea.
Attending the symposium, in addition to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo are National Police chief Tito Karnavian and Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. Among countries sending their delegations to participate in the event are Australia, Austria, China, India, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Vietnam.
