Jakarta Police Pledges 15,000 Personnel to Secure Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Newly appointed Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan said that the security of the Jakarta Gubernatorial Election would be his priority agenda next year.


"There will be 15,000 police officers to be deployed, with backups," Iriawan said at his office on Friday, September 23, 2016.


Iriawan added that he would focus his concentration on security the election in order to prevent conflicts from occurring.


He also pledged to ensure candidates' safety starting from October this year, by assigning 10 personnel for each candidate.


According to Iriawan, the security process will be in accordance with a schedule released by the Jakarta branch of the General Election Commission (KPU).


Earlier, incumbent candidate pair Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat has been endorsed by the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the People’s Conscience (Hanura) Party, the Functional Group (Golkar) Party and the National Democratic (NasDem) Party. The National Mandate Party (PAN), the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the United Development Party (PPP) formed a coalition to promote Agus Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murni.


Recently, the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) declared their supports for Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno to run in the election.
