TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary R. Yasay has denied President Joko Widodo’s statement claiming he had been given the green light by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for the execution of Mary Jane Veloso. Yasay said Jokowi has misinterpreted Duterte’s statement in their four-eyed meeting.
“President Duterte has not given the so-called “green light” to the execution of Mary Jane Veloso... and will accept whatever the final decision they will arrive regarding her case,” the Philippine department of foreign affairs said in a written statement, Monday, September 12, 2016.
Earlier, President Joko Widodo said he would discuss the execution of Mary Jane Veloso during the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Indonesia last week.
The Indonesian Presidential Palace had released a statement that said President Duterte had given a green light for President Jokowi to go ahead with Mary Jane’s execution. “President Duterte has given the green light to the execution,” President Jokowi said after his meeting with Duterte, Monday, September 12, 2016.
Mary Jane is a death row inmate convicted of smuggling 2.6kg of drugs to Yogyakarta in April 2010. She was arrested at Adi Sucipto International Airport.
