TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods that hit Kemang in South Jakarta, on Saturday (27/8) was allegedly as a result of the violation of the spatial planning in the region, according to urban observer Yayat Supriyatna.
According to him, Kemang, which was originally a residential, has now been changed into a commercial area, while water catchment areas are now used for apartments and malls.
Yayat added that the problem is the accumulation of violations of spatial planning in South Jakarta. He said almost half of the areas of South Jakarta have been covered with concrete and water catchment areas have also disappeared.
"As a result, the water is not absorbed by the ground, but directly flows into the drains," he said.
Yayat said floods that hit in Kemang on Saturday is still relatively small compared to the damaging effects of spatial planning violation in South Jakarta.
It is estimated that there will be floods that hit South Jakarta.
