TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati foresees Indonesia becoming the world’s seventh largest economy by 2030.

“Indonesia is projected to become the world’s seventh largest economy by 2030. Indonesia has been seen as a significant force,” Sri Mulyani said.

However, she noted that the opportunity could only be expolited should the government be able to effectively manage the national economy. According to Sri, the opportunity to become a global economic power is wide open as Indonesia has a wealth of resources.

More so because Indonesia has a significant demographic bonus. Compared to China, the world’s second largest economy, Indonesia’s population could contribute more to global economy.

“Although China currently stands as the second largest economy, it faces challenging prospects of population aging. That’s why China has shifted it’s economy to high value-added sectors,” she said Wednesday during a working meeting with the Commission VI of the House of Representatives.

Therefore, the government should prioritize its work on improving policy planning, she said. Minister Sri said that the fact that Indonesia has the opportunity to become one of the world’s largest economy does not necessarily mean that it would be achieved easily.

“The government needs to make efforts to realize its potentials. However, we also face challenges,” Sri said.
