TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director of Beverage, Tobacco, and Refreshment at the Industry Ministry, Willem Petrus Riwu, said that cigarette price in Indonesia is considerably expensive. "If we calculate our GDP on daily basis, cigarette expense fills at around 80 percent," he said.
Compared to other Asian countries, cigarette price in Indonesia is expensive - based on GDP. But he added expensive status is relative, as it relies on consumer's buying power.
Willem said that Japan has the cheapest cigarette price, based on the GDP. "It means that they have higher income. Thus cigarette price is considerably cheap," he said.
Willem also questioned the research that suggested a price hike on cigarette. "Do they have the right sample? If they want to make a statement, they need to solidify their reasons first," he said.
