TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bekasi Spatial Planning Agency plans to restore the city's Chinatown area – known locally as the 'Proyek' area - in East Bekasi District, back to its former glory.
"We will restore the Proyek area and turn that particular part of the city into what it once was, a Chinatown filled with charming cultural attractions and iconic classical buildings," Head of the Agency Koswara said on Monday, August 1, 2016.
Koswara added that there are still many buildings with solid Chinese cultural ornaments in the area, "Including the Hok Lay Kiong Kiong Temple and old-data-style residential buildings," Koswara added.
Koswara added that the Bekasi regional administration is currently organizing a spatial planning design contest as part of the rejuvenation project.
"We are currently holding a contest involving the public in an attempt to determine the design [of the area]," Koswara said.
Koswara said that the contest is expected to end by the end of 2016, while restoration works is planned to begin in 2017.
