TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, will be held in Sunday, May 1, 2016. Jakarta Deputy Police Chief Brig. Gen. Nandang Jumantara said that despite May Day rallies, the Police has assured that car-free-day will be held as usual.

“May Day celebration will be held, car-free-day must also go ahead, and [May day celebration] is expected not to disturb public order,” said Brig. Gen. Nandang Jumantara at Jakarta Metro Police headquarters on Friday.

To ensure a smooth commemoration of International Workers’ Day, Jakarta Metro Police have prepared themselves. “The public have no need to worry about it, car-free-day will go ahead, the expression of aspiration [by workers] will go ahead, both have their own activities,” Nandang Jumantara said.

Nandang said that during May Day celebration, which is planned to start at 8 a.m., workers will stage rallies to express their aspirations and police will continue to stand guard up to their final assembly point. “To secure the event, Jakarta Metro Police will involve around 16 thousand personnel, which include the TNI [the National Armed Forces], Satpol PP [the Public Order Agency], Transportation Department, etc,” Nandang said.
