TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia managed to record US$7.95 million (around Rp104 billion) worth of transactions during the 49th Cairo International Fair multi-product exhibition in Cairo, Egypt. The number was higher compared to the US$6.15 million recorded on the same event in 2015.

"There is a 29.23 percent increase [in value of transactions]," said Nus Nuzulia Ishak, Director General of National Export Development of the Trade Ministry in a press release on Monday, April 11, 2016.

Merry Maryati, Director of Promotion and Brand Image Development at the Trade Ministry said that currently, Indonesia is focusing on promoting its food and beverage products. Merry added that food and beverages constitutes 83 percent of the total sales value recorded in the exhibition.

"Food and beverages products are much needed in Egypt," Merry stated.

Despite the increasing sales value, Meri Binsar Simorangkir, Indonesian Charge d'affaires ad interim for trade at the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, said that one of the main trade barriers between Indonesia and Egypt is the 40 percent import duties applied by both countries.

"We expected that Indonesia could carry out production activities in the free zone area around the Suez Canal," Meri said.
