TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla said that the majority of power sources generated by state electricity company PLN must come from new renewable energy sources.
“Nine years from now, PLN’s clean energy must account for 50 percent. Currently it’s 30 percent,” JK said after opening the Bali Clean Energy Forum 2016 in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Thursday, February 11, 2016.
JK added that coal had been the major energy sources in Indonesia. However, JK expected that the proportions of coal would be reduced to 50 percent by 2025. The rest of the energy sources would come from gas and renewable energy sources.
“Coal is 60 percent cheaper than gas, so [the energy sources] must be balanced. However, the cost to the environment is more expensive,” he said.
Currently, Indonesia’s renewable energy utilization stands at 11 percent. Within the next 10 years, the government has set a target to increase the figure to 25 percent.
JK added that Indonesia had been fortunate to have massive renewable energy sources, due to its location in a tropical region. Therefore, JK said, Indonesia has a huge potential in solar energy.
“We also have volcanoes, which, according to a survey, are sources of 40 percent of the geothermal energy in the world. Indonesia is an archipelago state. It means that we have enough wind and waves. We have many rivers, and we can be benefited from them,” JK explained.
