TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah is down by 85 points to trade at Rp13,682 per US dollar in today's interbank transaction in Jakarta, February 9.
"The rupiah weakens against the US dollar after investors took profit from last week's significant gain," Reza Priyambada, chief researcher at N.H. Korindo Securities Indonesia said.
Reza said the crude price fluctuation prompted market players to take a short-term position against assets with commodity currencies, including the rupiah. With crude prices still lingering between US$30 and US$33 a barrel, the economies of emerging countries are still quite risky.
Ariston Tjendra, chief researcher at Monex Investindo Futures, said the United States' employment data last week was responded positively by some money market investors.
"The US dollar is gaining against most global currencies following the optimism of some investors that believe that the wage raise and unemployment decline in January were a strong motivation for the Federal Reserves to raise interest rates this year," he said.
