TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno has said he hopes that Indonesian political parties will not depend on financial support from the government. This is considered important to maintain the parties’ independence in the political world, “Political parties should also be independent as regards financial matters,” Sabarno said after opening the first Working Meeting of the Indonesian Provinces’ Administration Association (APPSI) held at the Patra Jasa hotel in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday (10/4). The Home Affairs Minister made this statement in response to reports that many political parties had been established only to receive financial support from the government prior to the next general election. According to Sabarno, the government currently still gives financial support to political parties but he expected this kind of support will be reduced or even cancelled. He went on to say that politicians shouldn’t establish new political parties if they aren’t capable of financing them. According to Sabarno, the financing of political parties is the responsibility of each political party. (Ecep S. Yasa--TEMPO News Room)
