TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World health Health Organization (WHO) has declared November 16 to 22 as the World Antibiotic Awareness Week that is aimed to avoid further emergence of antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance.

Communication Officer of WHO Indonesia Nursila Dewi said that antibiotic resistance have come to WHO’s attention since 1998, and a team is formed this year to specially oversee the issue.

“We work together with the government, stakeholders and communities from various countries including Indonesia to control antimicrobial resistance, particularly resistances that are caused by antibiotics,” Nursila said in Denpasar on Friday, November 20 as quoted by Bisnis.com.

The primary method to suppress accelerated bacteria’s resistance is by responsible use of antibiotics, which means using antibiotics only for diseases that requires antibiotic treatments and only when prescribed by doctors in appropriate dose and course.

“We collaborate with Health Ministry and Orang Tua Peduli Foundation to roll a number of campaigns during the World Antibiotic Awareness Week. In addition to Jakarta, the campaign location is also focused in Bali where atmosphere of arts are thick. It is relevant when the education process is done through art events,” Nursila added.
